Sherwood’s future on display at Robin Hood Festival
Updated on: 25 July 2007
The 70,000 visitors that are expected to attend the Robin Hood Festival next week will be asked to pledge their support for Sherwood: the Living Legend, a bid to win up to £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks: The People's Millions competition.

The Sherwood: the Living Legend trailer will be opposite the Major Oak for the week of the Robin Hood Festival displaying artists impressions and a model of the proposed new visitor complex, plus information about the plans to triple the size of the current forest site and connect it to four counties with a world class network of walking, cycling and horse riding paths. Austin Brady, Forestry Commission Regional Director for East Midlands and Chair of the Sherwood: the Living Legend Partnership said: “We‘re confident that we’ll go through to the TV vote in December, but it’s important that people let us have their contact details so we can let them know how and when to vote.”
“We have a one off opportunity to secure major investment in Sherwood Forest. If we can the secure the £50m lottery funding we will not only be protecting the long-term future of Sherwood Forest, but securing hundreds of jobs and millions of pounds into the local economy. It’s a massive opportunity and there is so much enthusiasm for it – we just need to harness that and turn it into votes in December. If you can’t make it to the festival you can register your support and find out more about our ambitious plans for the world’s most famous forest at www.robinhood.co.uk.
The winners of the Sherwood: the Living Legend coin design competition will also be presented with their silver coins featuring their winning designs at the festival.
Grunal the medieval Moneyer, a regular character at the Robin Hood Festival chose designs by Hannah Rodger, aged 12, from Palterton, nr Chesterfield and Lucy Marriott, aged 9, from Cossall in Nottinghamshire. Both girls and their families will be coming to the first day of the Festival to join the Chairman of the County Council for the Grand Opening Ceremony.
