Help Sherwood Forest get minted?

Updated on: 20 April 2007

Design a living legend coin for the Robin Hood Festival! We all know gold coins exchanged hands in Sherwood Forest, when Robin Hood robbed the rich to give to the poor.

Grunal the Moneyer, a medieval coin maker!

Now you have a chance to design a very special coin to commemorate Sherwood: the Living Legend, the £50m BIG Lottery Bid which aims to put Sherwood Forest back on the map!

Grunal the Moneyer, a medieval coin maker and regular member of the cast at Sherwood’s annual Robin Hood Festival, will choose the winning entry. Grunal is an expert at striking coins and the winning design will be used to mint coins for visitors to his stand at the Medieval Market throughout the Festival week.

Nic Broomhead, Head of Country Parks and Conservation, said: “It’s not every day you get the chance to design something that will be made for thousands of people – but if you’re a fan of Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood, now’s you chance. We are currently working hard on a BIG Lottery Bid which aims to secure a brighter future for Sherwood Forest. We hope our ideas to expand the forest and provide eco friendly visitor facilities, where people can learn all about the sensitive ecology of Sherwood Forest, will inspire youngsters to design a coin for visitors to the Robin Hood Festival.”

Entries need to be black and white line drawings only using the template provided in the Kids section.

The competition is open to all children under the age of 15 and the closing date for entries is Friday 29th June. The winner will be presented with a set of specially produced sterling silver versions of their coin at this year’s Robin Hood Festival, which takes place in Sherwood Forest from Monday 30th July to Sunday 5th August.

Don’t forget to include your name, age, address and phone number with your design. Please return your completed designs to: Country Parks Marketing, Rufford Abbey Country Park, Ollerton, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG22 9DF by Friday, 29th June 2007 at the latest.
