Jonas Rides to Sherwood’s Rescue

Updated on: 30 November 2007

Sherwood Forest’s bid to win the popular vote in the BIG Lottery People’s Millions competition received a massive boost today, when the star of BBC TV’s Robin Hood, Jonas Armstrong, rallied to the cause of his legendary home.

The star of the hit series put his name behind the bid and pledged to encourage his legions of fans to vote for Sherwood.

Sherwood Forest has been in decline for centuries and is now but a shadow of what it once was. But an ambitious rescue plan for the forest is now the subject of a televised public vote.

“I was unaware of the plight of what is the worlds most famous forest and am giving Sherwood’s bid as much support as I can,” said Jonas. "If Sherwood wins the BIG Lottery People’s Millions contest, then it will see the replanting of large tracts of the ancient forest with a quarter of a million oak trees.

“If we believe in Robin Hood, if we want the legend and the forest to live on for another 1000 years, then I urge everyone to visit www.robinhood.co.uk or text ROBIN to 81025 and vote for Sherwood today.”

Jonas has just returned from filming the latest series in Hungary to a full diary of engagements but has taken time out from his schedule to get behind Sherwood’s bid.

“This is really important to Sherwood’s future and to me. I’ve become very familiar with the legend, but like everyone else, I’ve just assumed that because the forest has always been there, that it always would be. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the forest every year, but how many realise that it’s slowly losing it’s giant oaks”

“I’m asking all of my fans to join me and ensure that we get the chance to restore Sherwood to some of its former glory.”

On-line voting started at 9am Monday 26th November at www.thepeoples50million.org.uk Phone voting starts from 9am Friday 7th December until 12 noon Monday 10th December. Sign up for a reminder to vote at www.robinhood.co.uk or text ROBIN to 81025.
