Nottinghamshire villages could share in People’s Millions
Updated on: 13 November 2007
At least 1 in 3 villages North and West of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire could benefit from the Sherwood: the Living Legend Big Lottery Fund bid.

A number of villages have already been identified, but the County Council and its partners are appealing for more communities who believe their village has an historical connection to Sherwood Forest come forward.
At least 50 villages have the opportunity to gain funding and support for a project that will benefit their local community.
The projects are dependent of Sherwood: the Living Legend wining the BIG Lottery Fund’s: The People’s £50 Million contest which we be decided by public vote in November and December.
Coun Chris Baron, Vice Chair of the Sherwood: the Living Legend board, said: “Sherwood has always been the forest of the people. This is a great opportunity for people in Nottinghamshire to decide how they want to celebrate their connections to Sherwood. Local people can determine how the money is spent in their community.”
Projects could include:
- Community-designed village signs to celebrate the distinctiveness of the local community.
- Village walks and trails – designed by the community for both local use and visitors, taking in some of the highlights of the natural and historic environment.
- Creation of focal points for the community, such as new “market crosses” designed by the community with expert assistance, to act as a focal point for the community and a celebration of its special character, or the planting of an oak from Sherwood in a prominent place within the village, with appropriate signage.
- Art in the landscape, enhancing and interpreting the wider landscape for users of the village trails and walks.
- Local environmental improvements, including areas around community facilities and buildings, and the creation or enhancement of community open space, such as pocket parks.
- Small scale conservation improvements, such as wildflower planting, community tree planting, hedge gapping or the creation of ponds.
The projects will be delivered by local communities themselves with support from organisations such as the Sherwood Forest Trust, Groundwork, the Greenwood Community Partnership and district councils.
