Nottingham City Council back Sherwood: the Living Legend

Updated on: 19 October 2007

At Monday’s (15th October 2007) City Council meeting members voted on a motion to get behind the County Council bid to establish a new visitor complex at the heart of Sherwood Forest.

Jon Collins, leader of the City Council urged local people to get also get behind the bid. Jon said: “Nationally and internationally many people identify Nottingham with Robin Hood and this development would help to attract even more visitors to the centre and to the city of Nottingham.”

County Councillor Chris Baron, said: "The City and County are working together to promote Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest. We're delighted that our colleagues at the City Council are supporting our ambitious BIG Lottery bid.

"We need to ensure that this huge pot of lottery cash comes to Nottinghamshire and benefits our local communities. I urge everyone to pledge their vote and register at www.robinhood.co.uk or send a text ‘Robin’ to 81025."

If successful, The BIG Lottery funding will be used to see a host of improvements at the site. They include: the restoration Sherwood Forest, doubling the present size of the core of ancient Oak forest - returning Sherwood to the Forest that Robin Hood would recognise as home.

Making Sherwood more accessible via a 250Km network of walking, cycling and horse riding routes which links Sherwood to surrounding towns, cities and visitor attractions.

A new visitor complex – our current visitor centre has seen better days. The 100ft tall wooden ‘Tree’ will be a beacon of environmental sustainability – you’ll be able to learn about Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest and living sustainably.

The benefits:

  • a secure future for the most famous forest in the world
  • a chance to bring a fragmented forest back from the brink!
  • over 900 jobs supported and £20m a year in to the regional economy
  • an iconic, sustainable and environmentally friendly tourist destination that the whole of the East Midlands can be proud of.
